Deer Season Chili
We live about 2 hours from my in-laws. When the weather gets cold we can count on heading that way at least one weekend each month. Hunting season starts.
The men trudge out at 4:30 am and we sleep snugly under fuzzy blankets until the sun comes peeking in the windows. We emerge in slippers to a pot of coffee and a batch of pancakes off the griddle and spend the day doing crafts, playing with Playdough, and preparing a yummy dinner for when they return.
One of my favorites is my mother-in-laws chili. There’s something about a big pot of chili on a Sunday afternoon to fill up bellies on a cold November day. One big bowl and all is right with the world. Today our batch was ground hamburger but soon we’ll substitute deer meat!
Enjoy!
3/4 lb lean ground hamburger
1 c chopped onion
1/2 c chopped green pepper
2 cloves garlic minced
2 16oz can tomatoes
2 cans kidney beans
1 8oz can tomato sauce
2-3 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp dried basil
1/4 tsp sea salt/black pepper
Directions:
Brown burger and onion in skillet until cooked.
Combine all with remaining ingredients in large pot. Simmer 30 minutes. Enjoy.
