Empowering or Not, J. Lo & Shakira Brought the HEAT to Super Bowl LIV!

Ladies, come on now, we can do better.

I missed the Super Bowl and halftime show last night with us traveling but here’s what I learned from my news feed…

J.Lo wasn’t wearing enough clothes.
They both looked “like strippers”.
It was “horrible”.
The whole performance was “degrading to women”.
The singing “wasn’t that great”.
It was too “over the top”.
“I turned it off. Ridiculous.”
I even read words like “trashy” and “gross”…

ARE. YOU. FREAKING. KIDDING. ME?????

Look at us, ladies. Here we are… with things like “lift each other up”. “Fix each others crowns”. “Empower one another”. “Build each other up not tear each other down.”

But when a pair of women, who are 43 and 50 respectively, put on the performance of a lifetime, showcasing their Latina style, their catalog of music that includes songs about their strong bodies (hips, booty, curves, etc), and they show off their strong bodies and dance better than probably the majority of the population, we find the need to criticize it and “tear each other down”.

We want strong, confident and empowering- but not too strong, confident or empowering??

I watched it, then watched it again. Those moves. That choreography. The confidence. All while singing. And in heels nonetheless. That was powerful, inspiring, and gave me chills. Especially when they brought all the young girls out- J.Lo’s daughter included and rocked some girl confidence together!

“Ain’t nobody gotta tell you, what you gotta do now.”

It wasn’t long ago that Lady Gaga stood up there and rocked that entire arena, pipes blaring, and she was criticized for her “rolls” that hung over her sassy silver briefs. Enough, y’all.

They owned that stage. They owned that performance. They proved that age is only a number. And embraced every curve, every song, every hip and booty shake, and that they can do more that most of us women could ever dream of.

Y’all know if it was Jason Momoa up there you would’ve complained that he was wearing too many clothes… and what about Maroon 5’s shirtless “hot” performance last year that everyone was swooning over?? #dontbelikethat

Congratulations on a hell of a performance to those two badass women- that was incredible!
