7 Simple Tips For Meal Planning Success
It starts right here…
Curious, who finds it a challenge to pin down nutrition? Meal planning? Creating a system that works?
It has definitely taken a LOT of practice and trial and error over the years. But I’ve found a few things that make it easier for us so I thought I’d share them below. Simple things that we’ve implemented to build a healthy lifestyle for our family!
1. Set aside time.
I plan about 30 minutes on Sunday to search recipes, write and type out my plan for the week. It takes me about 45 minutes to grocery shop. I spend about 60 minutes to prep food. Time is important here- and truthfully you can cook and prep efficiently in an hour.
2. Stick to the list or plan.
When I stray, I overspend. Or buy Oreos and ice cream. I print out my menu. I write out my list. I keep it front and center.
3. Eat before you grocery shop.
If I shop on an empty stomach, I buy more. I am a sucker for impulse foods and end up noshing on beef jerky and Cheetos in the car on the way home. Avoid grocery shopping on an empty or hungry stomach to avoid overspending or combatting your plan to get healthy.
4. Enlist your family to help.
Typically my husband is chopping or grilling. I’m marinating or slicing. I ask the girls to help when they can. I also enlist them to help me make our menu. They are much more likely to eat what they’ve requested (within reason). Tonight, the girls helped me make healthy muffins. And they dove right into them right away.
5. Eat what you like!
There are so many healthy alternatives to traditionally unhealthy foods. I keep a lot of recipes on here too! Flatbread pizzas. Spaghetti squash bake. Stir fry. All things tacos. Cut out some of the crap. The added sugar. The fried or processed foods. And clean up the unhealthy options by adding fresh, baked, grilled, or even air fried alternatives.
6. Prep your kitchen.
Get a good chopping knife. A sturdy cutting board. Meal prep containers are a must – these are my go to . Measuring cups for portions. Freezer bags to freeze extra spinach/fruits for smoothies. Silicon muffin tins are great for muffin prep too!
7. Don’t overspend. Be frugal.
Look for “off” brands. Buy in bulk if it saves you money and is feasible for you. Shop at places like Aldi or discount grocery stores. Use the app if your store has one for extra savings/coupon.
Eating clean/healthy doesn’t have to be daunting or absurdly expensive. It does take time and effort and initially getting into a groove is key.
